Noisy dogs and residents’ rights

On Behalf of | Aug 31, 2017 | Neighbor Disputes |

“Home Sweet Home” is the well-known phrase to describe a place of residence in America, but not when neighbors surrounding that residence make a home unbearable. Loud neighbors in Seattle not only disrupt daily life, but can also negatively impact one’s emotional and physical wellbeing.

Loud dogs belonging to neighbors can also create frustration and distraction, and such incidents can make resolutions seem more difficult. However, there are a number of routes local residents can take when experiencing jarring residential issues such as loud and unruly pets.

Local Solutions

The Seattle Animal Shelter addresses the issue of unreasonably loud dogs in residential areas, and while they point out that usual city noise is a natural part of living in the city, they also state that residents may report extremely loud pets. Residents may first communicate with pet owners to attempt to negotiate a solution, as some are not always aware of the level of noise occurring. Other options the shelter provides are submitting a complaint, in which individuals may contact the shelter directly, or requesting professional intervention if issues persist. If the violation occurs within 90 days of the first complaint, the shelter may assign an officer to investigate.

Additional Options

While the Seattle Animal Shelter may address concerns regarding loud pets, the Tenants Union of Washington State brings to public attention that the Landlord-Tenant Act of Washington State does not specifically state direct options for addressing concerns that arise between neighbors. If individuals rent instead of own a home, they may contact the landlord to discuss possible courses of action. Rental agreements often include sections on noise complaints and quiet hours, and experts also encourage tenants to record any incident for possible future reference.
